This website is not about tricks and tips and 'must-do' checklists.  Good teachers are reflective practitioners who choose teaching approaches and methods according to the needs of their students nested within the unique contexts of their classroom, school and community.  This website provides resources in line with the Science of Learning, cognitive and educational psychology and common sense.

"Quality teaching occurs when the teacher's ongoing analysis of the context, and the teacher's decisions about which pedagogical knowledge and abilities apply, result in optimal learning for all students."

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a way to think about planning for teaching so that everyone is included or has access to learning.  It's a way to think about providing access to curriculum, to having opportunities to think, create, contribute, make mistakes, access to social and emotional learning and development, and access to learning spaces and opportunities.  To learn more, Click here

UDL is a way of thinking...a way of planning...a way to provide equitable learning opportunities.  Because of that I do not separate UDL and Differentiated Instruction....I think that's creating a false dichotomy.  Instead, Differentiated Instruction is considered here under the umbrella of UDL as a means to enabling diverse learners different paths to the same or associated outcomes within the curriculum.

Great Articles

In this section there are a number of research articles and opinion pieces worth considering.  Teachers do not have a lot of time on their hands to read and study current research on teaching and learning.  However, if time was to be carved out of their already-overloaded schedules these are the articles I would recommend.

Connect with me....

Hi, my name is Chris Mattatall and I curate this website for the purpose of sharing it with classroom teachers who want to learn more about how the learning sciences can powerfully impact and influence learning.  The Science of Learning and Development (SoLD) is a growing field and you are likely to hear a lot more from it in the coming years.  We are learning a lot about how human beings learn and develop from cognitive science, education, anthropology, psychology, computer science, sociology and many other disciplines.  These all contribute to the learning sciences, or Science of Learning...and this page is dedicated to that work.

I am an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology and Inclusion in the Faculty of Education at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada.  I work amongst a team of colleagues who desire to see pre-service teachers develop into professional educators in all aspects of their professional careers.  The Science of Learning and Development is just one area that helps classroom teachers thrive.
